Things I Love Thursday – Nikkor 50mm f/1.8

So many things I love lately but I keep coming back to this baby. I know most of you won’t understand my love affair with this piece of equipment but it’s all I can think about right now.

A NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8. It’s a lovely lens and my friend let me borrow it to take some pics lately for two volleyball tournaments. You can see them on my photography website. I would really love to add this to my lens stash permanently. It only retails for about $140.00. That’s not too bad and with my upcoming birthday it might just be the perfect thing to buy for myself 🙂

Things I Love Thursday – Real Simple Family Issue

Things I Love Thursday

Tuesday while waiting in line at Walmart (four lanes open out of 30, come on people, really) I picked up an issue of Real Simple. I don’t really know a whole lot about the magazine so I had no idea that it was the family special issue. LOVE, love this issue.

There are so many dog eared pages, I need to just flip through the magazine again in order to see what I liked. I grabbed the magazine and started perusing and made a snap judgement to just buy the thing. I am such a typical magazine shopper. Meaning the headlines are the reasons I buy. Ugh I hate that I just admitted that but it’s true and it’s who I am. There weren’t a whole lot of headlines on this issue but I grabbed it because I wasn’t in the mood to read a tabloid. Aren’t we all sick of Jon & Kate Plus 8 on the front of magazines? I know I am. Some the things that made me drool….

  • They have this section called “new uses for old things”. I loved three of the tips but I think my fave was using ankle weights to sturdy a top heavy umbrella stroller. Brilliant. Nothing is more annoying than when your child stands up and the stroller topples backwards sending your purse and your packages to the floor. It’s happened to all of us, we all just pray that the contents of our purse don’t go rolling all over the mall. I’ll be using that idea.
  • The article “Fun on the Cheap” had several websites that you could visit for coloring pages. For instance you can visit www.nationalgeographic.com and in the search box enter coloring book and you’ll have your pick of animals. Everything from a monarch butterfly to humpback whales. Love this!!
  • “Report Card” had a listing of the best bandages, chicken fingers and wall hooks. The bandages information was good to know info. I just liked the fact that they called the section report card and that they were reviewing random things that us moms use.
  • This I am very excited about… the “keep-it-together mom” section had organization tips for your entryway and I plan to utilize several of these ideas. I was so excited I couldn’t wait to show JT when he got home. Although he didn’t show my enthusiasm I know that if our mornings are smooth as silk, he’ll be a happy fella. Plus I can make over our entryway for about $7, can’t beat that.
  • “Mom’s Night Off” I plan on making the peanut butter and chicken noodles with carrot and cucumber ribbons. I’m adding it to our meal plan in the next two weeks and hopefully will be able to blog my opinion.
  • In the section “delights and distractions” under the new family traditions, they listed a Yes Day. The idea is that everytime you say ‘no’ to your kids you have them write it down (or you) and place it in the ‘yes’ jar. Then on a day when you have time to do something fun you can have them pull out a piece of paper from the ‘yes’ jar. I love this idea. You feel like you aren’t constantly shooting your kids ideas down and they get a say in what we do every once in a while.

Okay those are my favorites things from the family issue, believe me there were many more. This issue has so much packed into it that I feel like I would really benefit from a subscription. I know they all won’t be about family but I just liked all that organization and all the good ideas. I drooled my way through the whole thing.

Top Ten Tuesday – Things I Love About My Job

Top Ten Tuesday

Wow has it been a while since I’ve done a Top Ten List. I’ve been really busy this summer and I’ve been working as a Photographer’s Assistant for Holly McCaig. I feel like I’m cheating… I get paid to do something awesome. I’m extremely fortunate. So here’s the 10 things I love about my job.

1. How much I am learning. Like make sure your memory card is in your camera before you start shooting. But seriously, she is teaching me all about focus and exposure.

2. The people you meet. Everyone is so nice that we have photographed.

3. I now walk around and notice great spots for photo sessions.

4. I’m getting more sure of myself and my photography. I’m starting to feel like “I can do this”.

5. The chance to take one of her classes or learn more about photoshop from her.

6. Someone to share my ideas with. If I see something in a magazine or on-line not only do I share it with my friend S, but now I can share it with Holly too.

7. I like projects. For instance today we switched her studio around and I loved being there and helping her think it all through.

8. My supportive and loving husband who makes it all possible. He watches the kids so I can go work.

9. The fun that is yet to come, like helping shoot a wedding, or a newborn baby and possibly even boudoir. There is talk that maybe someday I could be a second shooter.

10. I have a new friend. Holly is awesome.

Things I Love Thursday – Old Photographs

Things I Love Thursday

While cleaning out our basement earlier this month I discovered a bag full of old pictures. Love that. They were pictures of my husband as a baby. Until now he had always claimed that he didn’t possess any pictures of him as a baby. They were probably given to him when they cleaned out his mom’s house. Anyway I love them, the kids love them because now we have a little part of JT’s youth.

Someday I will scan all of the pictures I found so that they will always be preserved. If you have anything you love and want to share, check out The Diaper Diaries.

Things I Love Thursday – Kraft Food & Family

Things I Love Thursday

I love Kraft Food and Family magazine. The recipes are really good and pretty easy. Not too long ago I received my Summer issue and couldn’t wait to break it open. I always include recipes from this magazine when making my grocery/menu list. In fact, this week I made one recipe that will become a regular for us.

Grilled Chicken Roller

– Small boneless skinless chicken breast (I used chicken tenders to make them smaller)

– Kraft singles (I cut these in half)

– Bacon (I also cut these in half)

– Kraft Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing

Heat your grill (I used an indoor one) to medium heat. Pound chicken to 1/4 inch thickness. Top with the cheese and roll up tightly. Wrap bacon around the long sides and cover and of the exposed cheese, stretch the bacon as necessary to fit. Secure with toothpicks.

Grill for 15 to 20 minutes or until chicken is done (165 F) make sure and turn frequently. Brush the dressing onto chicken the last 5 minutes.

We served with buttered egg noodles and broccoli and oh my god was it delicious. I could probably eat it again tonight.

I cannot wait to try the Brat Wraps, Cookies and Creme Pudding Pops, the Warm Italiano Spread, Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad and of course the Frosty Orange Creme Layered Dessert. It probably would have been easier to just say everything in the magazine. 🙂 They do have a website KraftFoods.com where you can sign up for the magazine or just get recipes from there too. Like all of the ones I listed above.

Things I Love Thursday – My Jumpshot

Things I Love Thursday

No I don’t play a mean game of basketball, I pretty much hate that sport. I am talking about my Lexar Media Jumpshot.

lexar_new_jumpshot

It has made my life a lot easier. My friend gave it to me when my mom and JT bought her camera for my birthday. It’s a lovely device and has made downloading my pictures a lot easier and faster without draining my camera battery. Thanks a ton friend.

Wanna see more TILT, check out Diaper Diaries, she talking about ice cream today and I could totally go for some right about now.

Things I Love Thursdays – My Afternoon Schedule

Things I Love Thursday

The kids and I have a new afternoon routine and I have to say I love it. We get home from wherever and I make the kids lunch. While they are eating lunch I work out with my Shred (don’t let my whining kid you, I actually enjoy it), afterwards I get cleaned up and then we all sit down for an afternoon movie with a snack. When the movie is over I start dinner preparations or go retrieve JT from work. It’s the most fun I have had with myself and my kids in the last few months. One of the kids is always in my lap and we watch good, fun movies. Today we watched Night at the Museum. Gotta say I hope this continues for a while. Mind you I live in a tiny apartment so there is not a whole lot of “housework” to do, so usually when I sit down I am not neglecting much. Maybe a few toys being picked up but you know what it’s totally worth it, I’m a much happier mommy.

I’m late today but if you want to see other TILT check out The Diaper Diaries.

Things I Love Thursday – Reading

things-i-love-thursday2

I love reading, which is why I started my own book club, I am more of a summer reader than anything during the fall/winter because truth be the-middle-placetold all of my TV programs are new. So in the summer when everything is in repeat you will finding me sitting at night with the baseball game on in the background reading. So, I was recently sent a book to review (in between our book picks for our book club which is a shame because I think the girls would like this one) and have been very excited about reading The Middle Place by Kelly Corrigan. I had seen this book in book stores and now I see that even Oprah herself has read and reviewed this book, but now it’s my turn.

I am a judge the book by the cover kind of reader (and the cover is very welcoming), unfortunately, but I also will read the back of a book or dust jacket and after reading the book’s information I was very intrigued.

For Kelly Corrigan, family is everything. At thirty-six, she had a marriage that worked, two funny, active kids, and a weekly newspaper column. But even as a thriving adult, Kelly still saw herself as the daughter of garrulous Irish-American charmer George Corrigan. She was living deep within what she calls the Middle Place – “that sliver of time when parenthood and childhood overlap” – comfortably wedged between her adult duties and her parents’ care. But Kelly is abruptly shoved into coming-of-age when she finds a lump in her breast – and gets the diagnosis no one wants to hear. When George, too, learns that he has late-stage cancer, it is Kelly’s turn to take care of the man who had always taken care of her – and to show us a woman who finally takes the leap and grows up.

From the moment I picked this book up and started reading the Prologue I was hooked, alone just for the fact that I fell in love with her father (Greenie, The Green Man or old Billy Goat). I also love that he calls his daughter (Kelly) Lovey. It made me smile each time he called her by the nickname, especially bringing me to tears as she discovers her breast cancer diagnosis and he rushes to her side.

There is also the tale of her marriage, which Edward (her husband) sounds like an amazing man. I won’t say better than my own husband because mine is pretty great but I can only imagine what cancer can do to a marriage. I would think you would have to really have a strong marriage and a lovely husband such as Edward to have your relationship survive cancer.

The book is beautifully written and it keeps you coming back for more, more of her youth that she describes in every other chapter and more of her struggle with not only her own cancer diagnosis but also her father’s, which she finds out about on November 23rd 2004 the day before Thanksgiving.

You can easily relate with her because she tells you the real stuff and not just the real stuff about motherhood, marriage, being a daughter but also being a cancer patient. This book is comforting, funny, touching and a tad bit voyeuristic, but I really liked reading it, I won’t spoil anything for you by revealing anything more but I think it’s a light and easy read and PERFECT for a summer vacation or a lazy day on your front porch.

Things I Love Thursday – Trail Mix

things-i-love-thursday1sunny-cranberry-trail-mix

It’s not just any trail mix, it’s heaven in my mouth trail mix. Made by Archer Farms, you know… our friends from Target, and it’s called Sunny Cranberry Trail Mix. YUM!!! Dried cranberries, almonds, golden raisins, sunflower kernels and pepitas. I didn’t even know what a pepita was until I found this trail mix. By the end of the bag I was picking them out and eating them individually. A pepita by the way is an edible seed of a pumpkin or other cultivar of squash (thank you wikipedia). I usually am not a fan of trail mix but I highly suggest you check it out. Oh and for once this isn’t a review I was asked to do 🙂
