What is your all time favorite movie? Mine hands down is Steel Magnolias. I cry like a baby everytime I watch the graveside scene. You know the one… where M’Lynn (Sally Field) is crying so hard and says that she just wants to hit something so they feel as bad as here and Clairee (Olympia Dukakis) grabs Ouiser (Shirley McLaine) and tells M’Lynn to hit her. It’s classic. Plus the whole thing is just one big feel good movie. Now I know there are several women out there that agree with me but I am sure you won’t find very many men. Probably just a handful. So what’s your favorite movie of all time? One you can watch over and over and it never gets old.

Am I Alone?

Do you ever feel like you are the only mom on the planet that can sing every single High School Musical, High School Musical 2 or Camp Rock song? Or that Zac Ephron could be a hottie if I were 8 years old again? Please tell me I am not alone!

My daughter is so into these movies that I actually bought People magazine last night so she could see the sneak peeks for High School Musical 3. I feel like this is all I have accomplished this summer so far… memorizing all of these songs (not by choice).

Did I mention that she is only 4. She even has J involved now. You should see him dance to this…

I always thought my kids were too young for these movies, apparently not.

I love to make cupcakes for my kids on their birthdays. I decorate them all crazy and theme like, I’m not saying I am good but I try. For instance for my daughter’s second birthday she was in love with JoJo’s Circus so I decorated her cupcakes to look like JoJo’s head.

Then for Easter that same year I decorated cupcakes to look like bunnies

and then Halloween that year I decorated Frankenstein monster cupcakes.

I love doing this and think it’s fun. Last year for J’s birthday I even attempted a whole cake that looked like a monkey. Unfortunately it didn’t travel well to my aunt’s house and broke apart. Oh well it was still cute.

(not my best work but at least I tried, I was so sad when it fell apart, he didn’t care though)

So because of my passions I recently got this book called Hey There, Cupcake. My mom bought it for me and I can’t wait to try some of them. I also just went and bought this book today called Hello, Cupcake, it was featured in Family Fun’s Magazine with this picture. Doesn’t that look really cool. I love it. It’s another form of art and creativity for me. I cannot wait to make some of these, now if I could only find an example of the Wiggles cupcakes for J’s birthday coming up :-)

Don’t Worry!!! J is drinking apple juice!

Tonight I was reading all my daily/nightly blogs when I started reading my cousin Carrie’s blog. She had an interesting slideshow about plastic bags and the severe damage they are doing to our environment. I have always considered buying canvas shopping bags and I really would like to do that but here are my concerns (some may be stupid to you but I’m just curious what the “green” thing to do would be).

  1. What do you do about produce? I buy a ton of produce and I always use those tiny produce bags.
  2. What do you do about trash bags? I assume they are just as bad for the environment as the shopping bags.
  3. How many do you think a family of four would use? I think in order to just get my groceries home I would need to buy 7 to 10 of them. I buy 4 gallons of milk each time I grocery shop.
  4. Don’t you think they should be a little more affordable? I did a search tonight and here are the ones I found…..

All of these are way cute but check out those prices. I even think the basic kind on this site are still out of my price range. I don’t think I would pay over $3.00 for one. Especially if I had to buy 7 to 10 of them. I guess there aren’t very many “cute” options out there. Plain is fine, I am not complaining I would rather carry plain and simple than plastic anymore but the louder, more garrish and more fun they are, the more I will remember to grab them. I am new to this whole “green” thinking so be gentle.

Tanabata

What is Tanabata: It is a Japanese Star Festival that occurs on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar month. It’s a very sweet albeit strange story but here it is (there are several different variations, here’s the most common one I could find:

Orihime (織姫, Weaving Princess) the daughter of the Tenkou (天工, Sky King, or the universe itself) wove beautiful clothes by the bank of the River of Heaven (天の川 Amanogawa). Her father loved the cloth that she wove and so she worked very hard everyday to weave it. However, she was sad that because of her hard work she could never meet and fall in love with anyone. Concerned about his daughter, Tenkou arranged for her to meet Hikoboshi (彦星, Cow Herder Star) sometimes called Kengyuu (牽牛, Chinese name of Hikoboshi) who lived and worked on the other side of the Amanogawa. When the two met, they fell instantly in love with each other and were shortly married. However, once married, Orihime no longer would weave cloth for Tenkou and Hikoboshi allowed his cows to stray all over Heaven. In anger, Tenkou separated the two lovers across the Amanogawa River and forbade them to meet. Orihime became despondent at the loss of her husband and asked her father to let them meet again. Tenkou was moved by his daughter’s tears and allowed the two to meet on the 7th day of the 7th month if Orihime worked hard and finished her weaving. The first time they tried to meet; however, they found that they could not cross the river because there was no bridge. Orihime cried so much that a flock of magpies (鵲, カササギ, Kasasagi) came and promised to make a bridge with their wings so that she could cross the river. If it rains, the magpies cannot come and the two lovers must wait till next year.

How they celebrate: It’s a Japanese tradition wherein people write their wishes on tanzaku papers (colorful, small strips of papers) and hang them on bamboo branches. People also decorate bamboo branches with various kinds of paper decorations and place them outside their houses. Many cities and towns hold tanabata festivals and have tanabata displays, decorating the main streets. In some regions, people light lanterns and float them on the river, or float bamboo leaves on the river.

Why am I telling you all of this? Because my little L and my mom took a class today at our Botanical Gardens and they learned all about this celebration and they made their own bamboo branch with wish papers. Here’s a picture of L with hers.

So the wishes on her papers were: a house for mommy and daddy, a new car for J, more rice and rainbows (on a heart shapped paper which she said was for god).

Here’s a close-up of her wish papers…

She and GeGe had so much fun she can’t wait to go back. While they were in their class J and I checked out some of the Niki sculptures. They were so fun to crawl on and look through.

I was blown away by all of the really cool sculptures and will show more pictures some other day.

All in all it was a fun day and the kids were so tired because after the gardens we went swimming. WOW that’s alot in one day.

Tonight

We went to my favorite place to shop… TARGET and bought some essentials, we had dinner at St. Louis Bread Co (or Panera to everyone else) and then went on a search for blueberry pie. We have been craving some since my aunt made one on July 4th and it was so GOOOOD! We ended up at the grocery store because all of the bakeries around here were closed. Needless to say we didn’t get our blueberry pie.

On our way home we drove past our old house (we only live a couple of blocks from our first house) and it’s for sale. There’s an open house on Sunday. Would you go through it? JT really wants me to go through and take pictures so we can see what they changed. I told him to just go with me and we could check it out together but he is worried that the person might recognize him from the sale… 5 years ago. I don’t know maybe I will go. They were a newly married couple when they bought the house (JT and I were 4 months away from our wedding when we bought it) and tonight there was a stroller on the front porch (I was 8 months pregnant when we sold it and moved). I still haven’t found out the price, I can’t find it online, I am really curious about that part.

Now I am sitting here watching Jon & Kate Plus 8 and seriously I have to side with Jon. Kate needs to CHILL! All she did was complain tonight while the kids were decorating cupcakes. She is going to miss out on so much if she doesn’t just relax. Kids don’t keel over from getting a little messy, plus she was just majorly ragging. I could barely watch her tonight.

I know this is a boring post but I want to talk about our old house and Kate was annoying me so I tried to blur it together. Hope it doesn’t bore you to sleep, that’s where I’m headed.

Pictures of my finished Disney Character Scrapbook Album. Some of the pictures are blurry (sorry), all names have been taken off the journaling to protect what little anonymity I have left and I hope you enjoy!!

Breaking News

I can’t believe that this is breaking news. Seriously are we that hard up for news around STL.

Barack Obama’s plane had a little problem and needs some maintenace so his plane landed here at Lambert. Big whoop!! Then the news reporter goes on to talk about how it was Hilary Clinton’s plane first and this is the plane where they had a meeting a couple of weeks ago and he says “they sat in row 3 seat A & B”. WHO CARES!! The news channels just keep harping on the fact that he is sitting on our tarmac. This would be a good day to just turn the TV off.

I read this recently in the RFT and thought it sounded like a ton of fun. Here’s the info:

The Foundry Art Centre (520 North Main Center, St. Charles) is hosting Project: Firefly. At 6 p.m. on Wednesday July 9th everyone’s invited to gather at the Foundry Art Centre for brief instructions, then head out and catch lightning bugs in plastic jars with magnetic lids. Those jars will then be affixed to a large magnetic grid, thus creating ART and possibly even creating some discussion. And to add to the magic milk and cookies will be served to all participants. To volunteer as a bug catcher, call 636-255-0270 or visit www.foundryartcentre.org you do need to make reservations.

Could be a memory maker!!
